DUNCANVILLE, TX - The Duncanville Police Department is alerting the public of an increase in the number of pick-up truck tailgate thefts reported in the City of Duncanville over the past several weeks. To date, the City has received 13 tailgate theft reports, matching the total number received in 2011 and 2012.
According to a report released by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), the number of tailgate theft insurance claims has increased across the nation by 18% from 2011to 2012. Texas topped the list at 451 tailgate theft claims reported, with Dallas coming in third in the state with 51 tailgate theft claims reported.
Pick-up tailgates can be easily stolen and resold at a good price, making this a hot item for thieves. The Duncanville Police Department highly recommends locking the tailgate at all times. Pick-up truck owners can purchase locks to cover the hinge or can use a simple hose clamp to cover it as seen in the pictures below.
In addition, here a few more tips on how to avoid tailgate thefts:
• Park close to a building or large object to prevent the tailgate from being opened.
• Etch the vehicle identification number (VIN) or personal identification number into the tailgate; this helps to recover the tailgate if stolen.
The Duncanville Police Department will continue to monitor this trend and advices the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activity to 972-223-6111.
