How are events like providing basic needs and supplies to less fortunate people in Africa and Texas flags in Duncanville linked? The answer is when the Rotary Club of Duncanville thinks globally and acts locally in Duncanville. Over the past few years, the Rotary Club of Duncanville displays throughout Duncanville over 1,200 U.S Flags five times a year. Now, the club is also offering Texas flags in addition to U.S. flags. The added funds from the Texas flags will expand the clubs impact. Through the club’s fundraising activities, the club is acting locally. This year, the club will support ten $1,000 Freshman College Scholarships, will continue to partner with local Boy Scout troops, will continue to support literacy projects by donating books to the Duncanville Public Library’s book mobile and funded support for Little Free Libraries throughout the city. The club is also supporting young children in the Duncanville schools with the Early Act First Knight leadership and character building program. The Coats for Folks program has been a tremendous help for people in need by gathering gently used coats and dry cleaning them so they may be available for the winter months. The club also acts internationally by supporting activities like the Global Polio Eradication Initiative with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Rotary International. The club has also been involved in other programs which provide shoes for people in India and recycle books for students in Africa. According to Buddy Sheppard, Lead Flag Coordinator, “The U.S. flags make an impressive presentation throughout the City of Duncanville and to add the Texas flag will show an even deeper patriotic spirit in Duncanville.” Buddy adds, “By residents and businesses supporting our flag program, we are making an impact both here and around the world. All this with two flags posted right here in the City of Duncanville.” For more information about the Duncanville Rotary Club, visit the club’s webpage at: www.duncanvillerotary.org.
