Pantherette Player Wins National Award

Ariel AtkinsDUNCANVILLE, TX – Duncanville High School senior Ariel Atkins was named the 2014 Morgan Wootten Player of the Year on Tuesday, March 25. This award recognizes the best McDonald’s All American basketball players for their accomplishments both on and off the court. Ariel competed against five other top female high school basketball players for the annual award that pays tribute to the former DeMatha High School coach for his unprecedented achievements as a teacher and coach.
This season, Ariel averaged 17.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.8 steals and 3.9 assists. She is ranked as the number four prospect in the country and has signed to play basketball at the University of Texas. During her career at Duncanville High School, she helped the Pantherettes clinch two Texas state championships and win 105 consecutive games over the course of three seasons. This year she was named to the Naismith High School Player watch list and selected as SportsDay’s All-Area Player of the Year for the second year in a row.
Off the court, Ariel keeps busy maintaining a 3.5 GPA and volunteering as a youth basketball instructor. She is positioned to graduate in the top eight percent of her class, and is a member of both the National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Duncanville High School.
