DeSoto Library’s New Strategic Direction Paying Off

IMGP9017reducedDESOTO, TX – The DeSoto Public library has set a new strategic direction and it seems to be paying off. New Library Director McGeath has devised a number of strategic goals that are being utilized to build the library business. Those goals include:
1) Providing superior customer service.
2) Have the right mix of product for the market (materials for checkout and programs).
3) Utilize volunteers extensively
4) Engage the community and work with community organizations (including importantly the schools).
5) Create and efficient and effective workforce with a focus on productivity.
6) Keep costs down and spend money smartly (we fight cost on everything).
We are driven by these strategic goals and not a strategic plan sitting on a shelf somewhere. This focus on dynamic strategic goals has created a much more entrepreneurial approach that is focused on the environment that exists at any point in time, instead of some future point that may never actually come to exist. McGeath indicated that the library’s goal is to create a culture that incorporates the idea that change is the only constant, and provide for the best customer experience as cost effectively as possible.
After three years of declining stats since June the DeSoto library has seen a very nice recovery, and in November we saw a 54% increase in checkouts, an 8% increase in traffic or visits, and a 46% increase in our programming numbers (youth and adult combined). We have also changed our focus since August to increase usage of volunteers (per our strategic goal) – this November the library had 386 volunteer hours compared to just 38 last year for the same period. The impact of focusing on the strategic goals detailed above has been a nice increase in utilization in a very short period of time – McGeath started in DeSoto late March 2014.
